Himmelfarb Headlines - November / December 2018

Director's Desk

Director's Desk, Anne LintonThe start of the 2018/19 Academic Year has been one of successes and challenges at the Himmelfarb Library.  We have fully transitioned to our new integrated library and discovery systems (Alma/Primo) with just a few bumps along the way.  We have also successfully debuted our new web page with streamlined access to resources.  Patrons have embraced new services such as the Consortium Loan Service which provides access to the print holdings within the Washington Research Library Consortium.

Himmelfarb continues to host the GW Writing Center on Mondays from 1:00 to 5:00 pm and Thursday from 3:00 until 7:00 pm.  The Library’s Healthy Living program started the new academic year with a well-attended session on Nutrition Fact vs Fiction—learn and taste! Librarians have been busy teaching sessions on evidence-based searching, systematic reviews, and tools such as Scopus and RefWorks.  On the more challenging side, the Himmelfarb Library was faced with a static budget for this year.  In the face of continuing journal price increases of 5 to 7 percent, a number of subscriptions will be cancelled effective January 2019.  The Library collections team has worked hard to minimize the impact of these cancellations.  See the article below for a full report on the cancellation process and titles cut.
